Understanding the needs of students: Before you start designing training material, you have to find the needs of the learners. Training needs analysis and audience analysis is a key research area should be done before the ID project.

Capturing the attention of students: Simply creating training based on the needs of the audience is not enough. The audience should be interested also for training. To capture their attention, you have to start training with the "What's in it for me?" scenario.

Moving from simple to complex: Instructional design starts from a simple concept, which is relevant to the audience. Once you've conquered the basics, move to the complexity. People learn more if they can relate what they already know (knowledge base exists) to the new information.
